Sultan aka Jimmy, a Pomeranian, is the darling of Virar, Vasai and Nalasopara as he goes around, happily plonked atop Ajay’s autorickshaw. “We are spreading smiles,” says Ajay. “I realised this little one brings a smile on people’s faces. So, I started keeping him on top of the autorickshaw for people to see. It’s like Jay-Veeru’s friendship, but only better.”
Sultan was found by Nalasopara autrickshaw driver, Ajay Girja Shankar Verma, in Bandra eight years ago. Both have been inseparable since then.
“He has been there for me through thick and thin, and knows all my secrets as well,” laughs Ajay, who claims that his pet understands 10 languages. “Hindi, English, Marathi, Bangla, you name it,” he says.
Ajay rechristened Jimmy Sultan after the dog’s popularity in the neighbourhood grew - he wanted a “bolder” name for him. Sultan seemed an apt choice.
“When people in BMWs roll down their windows and ask me who this hero is, I found ‘Jimmy’ a little off. Sultan is bolder,” he says.
Ajay, who hails from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is not just an animal lover, but a doting father and feminist as well. “I’m very proud I have daughters. I hope my daughters follow their dreams to become a choreographer and doctor. I feel I have become a better person since Sultan has come into my life,” beams Ajay.
