Monsoon gives Mumbai a break

After heavy rains throughout the week, Thursday provided some respite to Mumbaikars. The city saw an average of only 17.4 mm rainfall on Wednesday (from 8 am on Wednesday till 8 am on Thursday) and has seen 1,457.2 mm rain since the beginning of monsoon, which is 56.97 per cent of the annual average.

But it is short of the 59.12 per cent rainfall received last year. After the first 20 days of July went dry, the Indian Meteorological Department had predicted that the monsoon would pick up towards the end of the month.

Accordingly, the showers did return, and there were heavy rains in most parts of the city, leading to one building collapse in Thane and several complaints of tree falls. The island city experienced 25.06 mm rainfall on Wednesday while eastern suburbs had 29.4 mm rainfall.

The western suburbs had the least 16.88 mm within 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures for the day were 29.5 degrees and 23.6 degrees Celsius. The city has seen 1,457.2 mm rainfall so far, which was 1,512.3 mm until this date last year.

The average rainfall of the entire season is 2,558 mm. There has been 56.97 per cent rainfall so far this year as against 59.12 per cent last year. Some of the lakes have shown a significant rise. These include Bhatsa (1.47 mts) and Middle Vaitarna (1.38 mts). Thus, the civic body has not taken any decision of a water cut so far.
