Monorail fire: Heated tyres might have led to monorail blaze, says MMRDA

The interim report submitted by the committee appointed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to investigate the monorail fire that took place at the Mysore Colony station mentions that the incident might have been a fallout of the friction between the heated tyres and the coaches.

Final report awaited
Speaking to mid-day, U P S Madan, metropolitan commissioner, said, "The independent committee that was appointed by the MMRDA has submitted its report to us. The parts of the train that got damaged in the fire have been sent to the forensic lab for testing. The final report will be submitted by next week. Only after that we'll be able to comment on the exact cause of the incident."

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior MMRDA official said, "Monorail phase I services will resume only after the final report is submitted."

Overworked rake
An MMRDA source revealed that a spark from the friction between the heated tyres and monorail coaches might have caused the fire.

He added that most likely the tyres got overheated because the same train had been used for trial runs on the Wadala-Jacob section the previous night.
