A young man who was sleeping on the terrace of his building to beat the heat accidentally fell off it, but escaped with minor injuries

In an incident that could well give Humpty Dumpty a run for his money, Karan Pawar (24) had quite the rude awakening early yesterday, when he woke up from his sleep, only to realise that he was in free fall, spiralling downward from the 40-foot height of his chawl's terrace.

Karan Pawar, who sustained a minor fracture on his left arm, was admitted to KEM Hospital yesterday

A resident of BDD chawl in Naigaon, Pawar went to bed early on Thursday night, having made plans to go out with his friends the next morning.

He said, "We sleep on the terrace, because it is so hot indoors. At around 12 am I woke up to go to the bathroom, and promptly went back to sleep.

I woke up again at 1.30 am, but in my groggy state I slipped and fell off the building.

I only woke up to realise that I was in free fall, after which I lost consciousness. I woke up the next morning to find myself at KEM Hospital.

Fortunately, I escaped death. I have no memory of what happened to me after I fell off the terrace."

Satish Pawar, Karan's father said, "Since we were all asleep, we didn't realise that he had fallen, or else we would have immediately taken him to hospital.

We only came to know in the morning when a passer-by saw my son lying unconscious on the ground, and informed me.

We rushed him to the hospital. He has only sustained a minor fracture in his left arm. But it was a terrifying experience."
