A MOB gathered outside the Juhu police station around 1 am to get the police to take action against the accused in an accident that had taken place earlier in the evening.

According to eyewitnesses, a speeding car rammed into a taxi and an auto rickshaw near the Gulmohur Crossing in Juhu around 7.30 pm.

The car driver lost control and hit a parked taxi in which the driver, Abdul Rub (64), was sitting and chatting with three others. Rub suffered head injuries.

The car then hit an auto rickshaw, injuring its driver, Sayyed Ejaz. Ejaz was rushed to the Cooper hospital and is still in the ICU.

His brother, Shaikh Rashid told MiD DAY that the car's driver was drunk. He said the police were dithering and were not filing the case until the mob gathered.

The accused was also arrested after the mob gathered. The Juhu police, however, refused to divulge his name.

ASI Sanjay Mhetre said he had no idea about the accident when MiD DAY spoke to him at 12.30 am. "Saheb has gone to the spot to do a panchnama," he said.

Rashid, however, alleged that the police have not arrested the real accused, who is from an influential family. "They are not telling us his name or allowing any of the eyewitnesses to identify him," he said.

Senior police officers asked not to be disturbed and refused comment.
