Metro fare war: Maharashtra govt challenges HC ruling in favour of RInfra in SC

The Maharashtra government has filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court’s ruling in favour of Reliance Infra led- Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) allowing the latter to implement higher fares - Rs10 to Rs40.

These fares were notified by MMOPL using provisions of Central Metro Act against the fares, Rs9 to Rs13, calculated by the state government using the concession agreement.

According to Metropolitan Commissioner UPS Madan said “We wanted the fares notified by MMOPL to be kept on hold till the time fare fixation committee (FFC) is formed. So we have moved the apex court seeking stay on new fares.”

The metro was being developed under the Tramways Act till November 2013 when it was brought under the Metro Act. The Metro Act enabled the MMOPL to fix metro fare afresh.

MMRDA, a state agency, and Anil Ambani-led Reliance Infrastructure, both of whom are part of Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd, have had a disagreement over the fares. While the state government wants minimum fare of Rs 9 and maximum fare of Rs 13, the Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd announced higher fares ranging between Rs 10 to Rs 40.
