The incident took place at noon on Wednesday, when the victim’s wife had stepped out of their flat located in Dombivli Nagarik Co-operative society in Dombivli (West).

When she returned, she found her husband lying unconscious on the floor, and immediately called the family physician. The doctor pronounced Anand Govind Nair dead upon arrival. Cops were called, after which the daughter Reena (33), was taken into custody and sent for a psychiatric evaluation. According to the police, the tests conducted deemed that she was mentally unstable.

“She kicked her father and attacked him with a wooden plank, which was lying in the hall, by repeatedly hitting him on his head with it. The victim’s wife wasn’t present at home when the incident took place,” said Arun Ghadge, assistant police inspector, Vishnunagar police station.

Police officials further said that Reena was earlier being treated at Thane Mental Hospital before she abruptly discontinued the treatment.

“The distraught mother informed us that she was undergoing treatment for a mental illness around 13 years ago in the Thane hospital, before she discontinued it,” added Ghadge.

Although Reena was declared mentally unstable, police officials said further psychiatric evaluations would determine the exact nature of the disorder.

A case of murder was registered in the Vishnunagar police station, where Reena was booked under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

“As of now, she is in police custody. Further investigations are being carried out and we will soon shift her to a hospital, where she will be put under treatment,” said a police sub-inspector from the police station.

Meanwhile, the deceased person’s post-mortem was conducted at Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan on the same day. His last rites were conducted yesterday.

The cause of death of the senior citizen, however, is still awaited, as the report is yet to be forwarded to the police station, Ghadge told mid-day.
