Mumbai electronica act Medusa moves on with a new drummer

Local band Medusa will see a line-up change with Mumbai alternative/metal band Surface Trauma's Harsh Karangale stepping in to replace Vinayak Pol.

The band that represents the new wave of electronica in the country wowed Brit producer John Leckie (who has worked with the likes of Radiohead) last year and toured UK's The Great Escape Festival earlier this year.

Says Pol (27), "I've been with Medusa for about five years now. I just felt I needed a change."

Pol has a number of side projects including Conversations, a fusion band, Pulse Conversations with drummers Gino Banks and Jay Row Kavi and has been a guest drummer with Mumbai alt rock band Shor Bazaar.

"I don't have as much time as I would like for Medusa."

Pol ensured that his split from the band wouldn't be messy either and in fact introduced the band to his replacement Karangale.

"Harsh loves electronca and drum 'n' bass music that we like. He seems to connect to our sound well," says Tiwari of their new drummer. Karangale who has jammed with the band twice says that he's been "gripping" the Medusa sound.

The band that started out with a more aggressive metal streak shifted to electronica sometime in 2005, and is currently working on a new album as well.

"We might be playing some of our new songs," says Pol, whose last gig with Medusa was at the Celebrate Bandra festival on Monday.
