First, the Limca Book of Records, and now, the curriculum of media studies at Khalsa college — Matunga station sure is going places! The college, located in Matunga, has including the station and its workings in the syllabus of second-year Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) students to teach them the subject 'Organisational Behaviour' and effectively explain several aspects, such as gender equality, behavioural dynamics and workforce diversity with a live example of 'Eve station', as they call it. A documentary and research project by students will be submitted to the railways as part of this.

Beyond theory
"Organisational Behaviour is an important subject for BMM students. Often, several concepts in it become more theory-oriented. But when we have an opportunity to introduce students to a live example — of gender equality — like this, we hope to be able to impart a much better understanding of the subject," said prof K P V Iyer, senior core faculty for BMM at the college. "It is a unique recognition to the station, which is part of our daily commute. It would be more interesting to learn how diverse workforce dynamics help in the functioning of any organisation, rather than just learning it in theory, its advantages and challenges."

Textbooks apart
One of the students working on the project, Ami Doshi, said, "It is really exciting, because now, we have a real-time project to work on. We learn a lot in theory, novel ideas of functioning of different organisations... But studying a live example like this, it's more exciting. Every one of us can relate to it better than any example given in textbooks about big organisations, because it's a part of our everyday commute and we all can understand the concepts more effectively."

Principal Dr Kiran Mangaonkar said, "It is a great recognition that this station has received, which is so near to our college. Why refer to old journals of big organisations, or other theories of management and human resources when we have an example right in front of our eyes?"
