Eleven days after he was admitted to the Kolhapur General Hospital, Hitesh Bhagat alias Chintu, son of matka king Suresh Bhagat, died last morning. Hitesh (35) was convicted for his role in the killing of his father and was serving a jail sentence. His mother Jaya and five other accused are also jailed in connection with the murder.

Jail authorities said that Hitesh was admitted to the hospital after complaining of stomach pains, as he was suffering from stomach ailment for the past few years.

In 2008, Hitesh underwent liposuction surgery at a hospital. Prior to the operation, he weighed 110 kg, and after the surgery he weighed around 75. There were also reports that Hitesh was suffering from TB.

Sources, however, said he was admitted to a hospital following an alleged drug overdose in jail, adding that soon after he was admitted his lawyer had even requested parole to get him treated at a private hospital.

“He [Hitesh] was admitted to a hospital in Kolhapur on March 12, as he was having trouble in the stomach due to the surgery and died on Sunday morning,” said Meeran Borwankar, additional director general of police (Prisons). When informed about drug overdose allegations, Borwankar asked to check with the hospital authorities.

Suresh Bhagat was killed on June 13 along with six others, including his lawyer and bodyguard, while returning to Mumbai after attending a court case in Alibaug when a truck rammed into the SUV in which he was travelling.
