Central Railway officials said the train experienced a technical failure at 12.58 pm at Jhumapatti station, which caused it to begin rolling back. The train finally came to a halt when it hit a buffer, very close to the edge of the cliff.
Officials said the train was waiting on the secondary track for the train from the opposite direction to cross over before it could go back onto the main line to continue its journey to Matheran when the incident took place.
“We refunded the money to the passengers and had to cancel the service. Services will operate normally from Monday,” said A K Singh, CR spokesperson. Around 20 services are run between Neral and Matheran every day
