Six months after his retirement, Sachin Tendulkar has found his way into the state board’s textbooks. From this academic year, Std IV students will learn about the achievements of the cricketing legend, and also find a list of his world records in a text book.

The education department has incorporated the information in the language books of English and Marathi medium. “Tendulkar is not only a national figure, but also holds international recognition. He has taken the country to a global platform. Our aim is to inform future generations about this legend,” revealed Rajendra Darda, minister of state, education.

The decision was taken by the education department following numerous requests from various activist groups and cricket fans, a day after Tendulkar retired from international cricket, after playing his 200th Test in November last year. Officials of the state education held a series of meetings to decide the appropriate subject and class where they could add a chapter on the cricketing legend.

One of the groups, Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS), also met the education minister with the same request. “Sachin is a legend, and after his retirement, it would be sad if our future generations remain unaware about his existence and achievements. We therefore requested the education department to incorporate a chapter on him, and are glad that they have agreed,” said Chetan Pednekar, vice-president of MNVS.
