A prominent Islamic body has filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court where it has sought five per cent reservation for themselves and an interim stay on the 16 per cent Maratha reservation issue, till theirs get sorted out.
Delhi-headquartered and Bhendi Bazar-based Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind filed the PIL few days ago, where it opposed the state government’s proposal to grant 16 per cent to the Maratha community, a matter which will be heard on Thursday in the HC.
Conduct thorough survey
Siddiqui Nadim Abdul Mustaqim, president of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has also asked that the State Backward Commission should conduct a thorough survey to investigate the correlation between caste and factors like education, employment, wealth, and social status within a period of three months, possibly to ascertain whether the Marathas deserve the reservation.
Senior counsel SB Talekar would represent Jamiat, the Central Executive Committee of which took a decision on May 23 to interfere in the petition of the Maratha Reservation issue. The organisation in the petition further stated that the community is not against the Maratha reservations, but it has to be based on a proper demographic survey and statistics, so as to come within constitutional permissibility.
A bench of justices GS Kulkarni and Justice Anoop Mohta had, in the last hearing, asked all the parties, including the state government, to file their replies. Noted lawyer Harish Salve will be representing the state, which is adamant in granting the 16 per cent reservation to the powerful community, which is also a strong vote bank.
