Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on Wednesday held an important meeting with officials of the housing ministry where he gave a green signal to float tenders for the redevelopment of Dharavi - Asia's biggest slum.

Dharavi redevelopment has been a talking point, after the then chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh wanted to transform Mumbai into Sanghai and wanted it to start from Dharavi.
However, Dharavi redevelopment, was caught in midst of controversies and no redevelopment took place in real for almost a decade. The whole project was divided in five sectors of which sector five was given to MHADA for redevelopment. The government wants the remaining four sectors to be redeveloped by private players. Earlier too, they had floated tenders, but then cancelled it.

Nirmal Kumar Deshmukh, CEO, Dharavi Redevelopment Project, confirmed that the CM has asked them to float tenders for the redevelopment of the remaining four sectors. "We are yet to receive the proceedings of today's meeting and after that in the next two weeks, we will float the tenders. We will set an eligibility criteria and only those who are able to match them, can participate. Earlier we had received applications from developers, but we had cancelled them."
One sector that is being redeveloped by MHADA, already has one constructed building and soon some 300 tenants of Dharavi will shift there.
