Corporate houses may have begun to offer day care services within office premises to their employees, but the trend is yet to catch on in the country.
Taking note of the need to have a day care centre within the Parliament, MP Poonam Mahajan, who represents the Mumbai North-Central constituency in the Lok Sabha, sent a letter to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Sumitra Mahajan, highlighting the need. The two are expected to meet on Wednesday to discuss the matter.
Sixty-one female MPs form the Lok Sabha and many of them are also mothers of young children. However, the demand is to open the day care centre for all employees working in the Lok Sabha, and not the MPs alone. “What I am asking for has already been adopted by many offices.
My demand is that a small area, of nearly 1,000 sq ft, be allotted for a day care centre where we can keep our children,” said Poonam, who has a 15-month-old daughter. “We can visit our child during our lunch break and post-work, the child will be with us. We stay in Delhi for months at a stretch and this facility will help us perform better as it will assure us of our kids’ safety,” she added.
Raksha Khadse, another MP from Maharashtra, whose son recently turned three, also says that a day care centre will be useful as now, she has to leave her son in Raver whenever she flies to Delhi for work.
If accepted by the Speaker, the centre will have nannies to take care of the employees’ kids.
