MNS group leader in the BMC, Sandip Deshpande, has proposed that every ward in Mumbai should have 50 policemen to make the corporation’s work faster

On many occasions, the BMC says there is no police force available for actions like demolition, or removing encroachers. This has given MNS group leader in the BMC, Sandip Deshpande, the idea that every ward in Mumbai should have a police strength of 50 and the corporation should pay them. There are 24 wards in Mumbai and to handle the 1,200 policemen, an IPS officer should also be appointed, he suggests.

The proposal, which is the notice of motion in the house meeting of the BMC on Monday, will be raised by Deshpande. He claims that he has also faced the problem of no policemen on several occasions in his ward.
“There have been several times that BMC officers, when asked why they haven’t taken action against hawkers, or some illegal encroachment, blame it on lack of a police force. Hence, I felt that police should be appointed in every ward, and they will exclusively work for the corporation,” said Deshpande.
The idea is based on the Government Railway Police, (GRP), as the Railways have their own protection force but for penal actions, are dependent on GRP. Similarly, the BMC has its security staff, but for work like demolition, removal of encroachment, water theft etc, is dependent on local police to help it out.
“I am going to raise the issue on Monday and am expecting that the proposal will be passed in the house. From there it will go to the state government. A delegation of MNS corporators will meet the chief minister and request him to pass the proposal,” said Deshpande.
Deshpande claims that the BMC wont be much burdened due to this, they will have to pay them between Rs 2 to 2.5 crore per annum (as per the police salaries) but it will help get work done fast.
After this proposal, the MNS leader claims that he will suggest having a spcial court for BMC problems so that those issues are dealt with faster too.
