MHADA postpones housing lottery procedure after letter from EC

Mumbai: Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority’s (MHADA) 2014 lottery procedure for 2641 houses of Mumbai and Konkan Board, which was expected to start from yesterday, has been postponed. The step was taken after the authority received a letter from the Election Commission, informing them that going ahead with the lottery would amount to violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

In the letter, the commission has asked the housing body to clarify how applications for the lottery procedures can be invited when the Model Code of Conduct is in existence.

MHADA has decided to reply to the letter soon, but as of now the online application procedure for the lottery has been postponed indefinitely.

Speaking to mid-day, a senior MHADA official, requesting anonymity, confirmed, "On Tuesday, the EC sent us a letter in which they sought clarification on how the lottery procedure could begin when the Election Code of Conduct was actually in force. We will be replying to them soon, only after which we will be able to tell you the new dates for the procedure.”
