Manmath Mhaiskar, a resident of Marine Lines, had gone to meet his friend, who lives in Dariya Mahal, Malabar Hill, around 7 am. His body was found below the building over an hour later. The police have registered an accidental death report and have detained two of his friends in connection with the death.

According to the police, Manmath had left his home early in the morning, allegedly on the pretext of meeting his friend. Around 8 am, the Malabar Hill police were informed about a youth lying in a pool of blood, below the high-rise.

"We rushed him to JJ Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival,” said an officer. It is still unclear whether it’s a case of suicide or accidental fall. We are investigating the case," said Rashmi Karandikar, DCP, PRO.

The cops have no clue as to what may have prompted the drastic step by Manmath.

Only a few days ago, Manmath had moved out of home at Marine Lines to move to Pune, where he was studying law. On Saturday, he returned to Mumbai for a break. On Tuesday, at 7 am, he told his parents he was going to meet his friend at Dariya Mahal, at Napean Sea Road. An hour later, his body was discovered.

"I was busy with chores when I heard a commotion. I rushed downstairs and found a boy lying on the ground; it was a very painful sight," said a resident.

"We found the boy in a pool of blood, his skull was cracked. He was rushed to JJ Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival," said a cop. The post-mortem was carried out at JJ Hospital and last rites were performed at Chandanwadi crematorium, where CM Devendra Fadnavis, ministers and top bureaucrats were present.

"Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide. The terrace door was open, and security allowed Manmath to enter the building as he was a frequent visitor," added another cop.
