Last week Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar had issued an order to the police force asking them to abide by traffic laws — to wear helmets and seat belts while riding or driving.

The Police Commissioner had set a deadline of August 15, for the men in Khaki to comply with the order, failing which strict departmental action was warned.

Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic) Milind Bharambe told mid-day that the drive began from Tuesday morning. “I won’t be able to share a figure, as the statistics would be compiled till late night. But, action will be taken on the cops flouting traffic rules,” he said.

Policemen were given an entire week to gear up and procure helmets.
In addition, the CP had also ordered the police to crackdown on officers who use a ‘Police’ sticker on their personal vehicles.

The Commissioner had issued the order as many citizens had complained that while they were regularly caught and penalised by policemen for not wearing helmets or driving without seat belts, there was no one to catch cops who openly flouted these rules.
