Actor-director Anupam Kher's house was attacked by Republican Party of India (RPI) members on Saturday, after he allegedly passed derogatory comments against the Indian Constitution. Kher had reportedly said, "The Constitution should be thrown out," on a TV interview in connection with Anna Harare's campaign for stringent anti-graft laws.

According to Juhu Senior Police Inspector Arun Bhagat, "Nine people have been taken into custody for attacking Kher's house. They threw bottles at the house and damaged the gates. We have charged them under sections 143, 427, 145, 147 and 149 of the IPC." On Friday, NCP secretary Jitendra Avadh had brought up Kher's alleged comments in the state legislative assembly. Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil had instructed the home department to look into Kher's anti-Constitutional statement and take action, if required.

"Let them probe my statement. I never said the Constitution be 'thrown out. I am intelligent enough to speak my mind without insulting the Constitution," Kher said when contacted.u00a0According to the actor, what he had actually said was: "It's time we revisit the Constitution". "What is wrong with that? Isn't the Constitution amended periodically?" he asked.
