Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay Kapur agree to divorce amicably

Actress Karisma Kapoor and estranged husband Sunjay Kapur put an end to their bitter divorce battle on Friday. They agreed to a settlement in the Supreme Court and will file for divorce through mutual consent in the family court in Mumbai next month.

Sunjay’s lawyer said the SC quashed the domestic violence case Karisma had filed against the businessman and his mother, which was reported in mid-day on February 27

Karisma’s lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani told mid-day, “Both parties have amicably resolved the matter. The financial and custody terms have also been settled.” He said the couple’s children — Samaira and Kiaan — will be under Karisma’s care, but Sunjay will have access to them for two weekends during vacations.

Although he refused to elaborate on the financial agreement, another lawyer involved with the case said the terms are the same as what had been decided when the divorce proceedings had begun 2014. “Karisma will get Sunjay’s father’s house (in Khar) transferred in her name. Sunjay has to purchase bonds worth Rs 14 crore for the children, which will attract a monthly interest of around Rs 10 lakh.”

Sunjay’s lawyer Aman Hingorani said the SC quashed the domestic violence case against the business tycoon. “The couple will now file for divorce on mutual consent at the family court in Mumbai on June 13.”

Sunjay’s lawyers had on February 28 told the SC that they want to settle the matter amicably, after which Karsima’s lawyer also gave the consent for it.

Sanjay and Karisma married in 2003. They decided to file for divorce through mutual consent in 2014, but withdrew the petition after Karisma alleged that Sunjay had failed to comply with the financial commitments mentioned in the terms of consent. Sunjay had argued in court that the actress had failed as a wife, mother and daughter-in-law, and that she had married him only for money. The actress later filed a domestic violence case against Sunjay and his mother.
