Iron scaffolding of under-construction building collapses in Byculla

Residents of Carani Niwas and adjoining housing societies in Byculla East escaped death by a whisker on Saturday morning as the scaffolding iron structure of an adjacent under-construction building came crashing down. No injuries have been reported.

An iron frame came apart in multiple sections at Maimoon Tower, which consequently damaged the roof as well as water and sewerage pipelines of Motiwala building, Warden Bungalow and Carani Niwas, a three-storey structure. The residents immediately called fire brigade, who then informed the Byculla police station about the incident.

An FIR has been filed against the builder, Rapid Construction. A resident alleged that though the cops were informed at 5 am, they turned up only at 7 am following which they inspected the site and then registered an FIR under Sections 336 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code against the builder.

What exactly happened
Businessman Ali Asgar Dhariwala’s top-floor flat at Carani Niwas took a direct hit of the collapse at around 2.30 am. “We were asleep when we heard a deafening sound. Though it was dark, I could see a large section of the scaffolding hanging over my head.

I rushed to the terrace for a closer inspection and found that a section of my roof as well as that of the nearby Warden bungalow had caved in due to the accident,” said Dhariwala. He added, “Thankfully, there was a difference of three to four feet between the actual roof and the ceiling. Or else, it could have been fatal.” Since it was raining heavily, the caved-in roofs started leaking.

Residents spent the entire night rescuing their furniture and electronic items from damage. When contacted, Aslam Zumi, one of the proprietors of Rapid Construction, said, “We are setting up a net around the buildings. We will try to ensure that such an incident doesn’t happen again.”

Assistant police inspector of Byculla police station, VP Rane, said his statement had been recorded. “The accused said that the incident took place due to heavy rainfall and wind on Saturday morning. But as such incidents can pose a threat to people’s lives, we will conduct an inquiry and soon take action,” said Rane.
