Teenagers have impressionable minds, and television programmes can be inspirational two facts exemplified by the transformation of a 17-year-old boy, who was recently arrested by Khar police. On January 8, a senior citizen had lodged a complaint of chain snatching with the police station, following which a sketch of the suspect was prepared based on the descriptions provided by the victim.

A patrolling team consisting of API Navnath Sonawane, Rajesh Lad, Ramdas Pingade and Pravin Sawant arrested the minor on Sunday from Dhanpada. Speaking to MiD DAY, Sonawane said, “We had shown the sketch to every police officer, because there’s a chance they might have spotted him while on patrol duty.”

The accused has been involved in acts of robbery since 2010 and has looted chains, laptops, cellphones and other valuables. According to police officials, the juvenile handed over the loot to his family, which needed money to repay a loan. Sonawane added, “After watching a Marathi crime serial, the accused gained information on how he could attack someone and also steal goods from people’s houses.

His family supported him as they started getting easy money. He also learnt that minors are not jailed, and this gave him confidence to commit such acts. The mother of the accused used to sell the gold items, which her son had looted.” Khar police has recovered a chain from the 17-year-old and he has been sent to Dongri Children’s Home. The accused has been booked under section 392 (robbery) and 380 (theft in dwelling house etc) of Indian Penal Code. He was presented in court on Monday and has been remanded till February 26.u00a0
