Bandra police officials make a breakthrough in the Afzal Pani case; seized hard disk reveals tactics employed by him to threaten businessmen

After the police carried out a raid at notorious informer Afzal Pani's house at Mazgaon on May 11, the police believe they have made a breakthrough in the case and that he is hiding at one of his acquaintances' house in Bangalore.

According to a source, the officials seized Pani's hard disk, which reveals Pani's method of earning money.

Bandra police reveal that the hard disk provided information on Pani's extortion racket and the various methods he used to shake down businessmen. The police are yet to nab Pani and another informer by the name of Mumtaz Sheikh alias Mamu.
The police are waiting for the victims of Pani's extortion racket, such as businessmen and bar owners, to come forward to complain against him but an informer claims that they are refusing to come forth owing to the contacts Pani had within the police, which could hurt their business even further.
The police told MiD DAY that various officials have fanned out in an attempt tou00a0 locate Pani.
"We have Pani's hard disk and have seen the methods of his extortion. He is wanted by the police and our men are doing their best to trace him," said Inspector DS Patil of Bandra Police Station.
Case history
On May 10, a case was registered against Pani with the Bandra police. Pani was booked for plying the police with false information, in an attempt to frame two Kutch-based men.

The investigators smelt a rat and traced the source of the false information to Pani. Though he is currently on the run, several police teams are trying to trace him.
