They have also found that one of the job seekers gained employment in Mantralaya for 20 days, on the basis of a fake recruitment letter.

The mastermind of the scam, identified as Kalpesh Ramkrishna Sevak, (32), was arrested on January 11 for duping several victims in the past three years.

Police said they have recently found out that in April 2014, one of the victims Shivshankar Sahane had worked at the Mantralaya as a liftman for 20 days, on a fake appointment letter.

All the accused duped the victims of Rs 74.53 lakh, which the cops are trying to recover.

Modus operandi
“Constable Vaibhav Koli, who was a part of the syndicate, convinced Sahane that he is now a Mantralaya employee, but instead of a liftman, he was given the job of a peon,” said Udhav Surve, sub inspector from Bhoiwada police station. Koli sensed that he would soon get into a problem, and asked Sahane to leave on the claims that he would fix him with a job somewhere else in the next couple of days.

Cops said that in his 20 days of employment inside Mantralaya, Sahane worked as Koli’s assistant.

“Whatever work came to Koli, he used to get it done through Sahane. He helped Koli get tea, photocopies and other clerical work assigned by the superiors,” Surve added.

Surve said, “His uncle Kanifnath Tukaram Dhare had filed an application with the Bhoiwada police station, following which it was turned into an FIR, and these three were arrested. The accused would make fake appointment letters of policemen, claiming that they have been appointed as a government servant.”

All the accused have been booked under relevant sections of forgery and cheating, while Sevak was produced in court yesterday and has been remanded in police custody till January 16.

Tracking the scammers
On December 14, mid-day had carried a report on police constable Harshal Kolghe, who was arrested for duping more then 16 policemen on the pretext of giving them ‘better’ jobs with Mantralaya, BMC, sales tax and the excise department. Kolghe had allegedly also handed appointment letters of deputy superintendent of police and sub-inspectors to the victims. During investigations, the cops had found out about the involvement of Vaibhav Koli, who works as police constable at Mantralaya. He was arrested on Jan 3.
