The woman was employed as a house help and the case came to the fore when the diplomat realised her money was missing and complained to the Gamdevi police.

According to the police, the accused, Rita Suresh Johri, had been working at the residence of Josephine Nirwonagize, a vice-consul with the Consulate General of Kingdom of Belgium situated at Bandra-Kurla Complex. The diplomat lives in Shakti Villa, Gamdevi.

Cops said Nirwonagize used to keep money in her bedroom cupboard for medical as well as miscellaneous expenses. She would lock the cupboard and keep the keys in her purse.

“On April 29, she had kept R63,500 in the cupboard. But, when she opened the cupboard the next day, she counted and found it short by R11,000,” said a police officer from the Gamdevi police station.

The employer, suspecting Johri’s involvement, informed her building manager about the incident. The manager then took Johri to the Gamdevi police station, where she confessed to the crime.

The police searched Johri’s house and found Rs 87,000 in her cupboard, which she couldn’t account for. The accused told the police she thought her boss would never come to know about her thefts as she had been stealing for a long time.

The woman had been working for Nirwonagize for one-and-a-half years and stole small amounts from time to time. Johri was booked under Section 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) of the Indian Penal Code.

“She has been remanded in police custody till May 5. We hope to recover the remaining cash as well,” said Rajaram Prabhu, senior police inspector of Gamdevi police station.
