Heritage Committee denies problems with size of martyr's statues

The Heritage Committee has denied it has any issues with the size of the statues of the city's first two martyrs Mangal Gadiya and Sayyed Hussain of the 1857 revolt that are to come up at Azad Maidan. Dinesh Afzalpurkar, chairperson of the heritage committee, was quoted by a tabloid saying that the committee has problems with the size of the statues since it will overpower the beauty of CST.

But u00a0he denied the story. "I have no objection to the height of the statue of the martyrs. I have just asked the concerned authorities to check that the new memorial is in consonance with the World Heritage structure, CST." He added, "We have asked the BMC to ensure that the memorial which includes too many things apart from the statue, does not affect CST and other heritage sites."

Mangal Gadiya and Sayyed Hussain were tied to the mouths of cannons and killed in front of thousands of people at Azad Maidan. As a mark of their contribution to the freedom struggle, the BMC has planned a memorial. It will include historical information of the 1857 uprising, details about Gadiya and Hussain, walls with sculptures depicting the uprising and bloodstained rocks around the cannon.
