Grant Road skywalk: Seven-foot view cutters to give residents privacy

Residents staying close to the Grant Road skywalk in Nana Chowk can heave a sigh of relief. They will no longer have to face the probing eyes of people trying to peep into their homes from the skywalk. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has started installing view cutters to protect the privacy of residents of buildings near the skywalk.

Residents had been complaining ever since the skywalk was inaugurated that beggars, drug addicts and miscreants would climb the skywalk and cause problems for them. A private security guard had been posted at the spot, but he was no match for the miscreants, who threatened and overpowered him easily.

Jayesh Rajput, a local resident, said, “After sunset, we had to close our windows because the drug addicts, miscreants and beggars used to peep into our house late at night. We later approached the MSRDC and the local police station, and brought this to their notice.

We are happy that the MSRDC has started installing view cutters.” Over a month ago, MSRDC engineer, Anita Pardesi, had visited the site, after which residents approached local MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha, who wrote to the MSRDC requesting that the view cutters be installed at the earliest.

Official speak
An MSRDC official said, “Residents staying in the Nana Chowk area, through which the Grant Road skywalk passes and goes towards the station, have been complaining for a long time that the skywalk, in the night, turns into a home for beggars, miscreants and drug addicts.

These miscreants used to peep into the houses in these buildings, and in order to solve this issue, we have started installing view cutters on the skywalk.” The view cutters are at least seven feet high. MSRDC has also requested help from the police to control the situation.

“Most of the times, these miscreants are in groups and it becomes difficult for the guard to control them. In order to stop the entry of beggars and miscreants on the skywalk at night, we have requested the local police station to conduct surprise visits at the skywalk late in the night and take action against those who are seen creating nuisance,” added the official.
