“I always wanted to do something for the people. But my commitment to the force limited my approach. However, during my time in the force, I managed to finish the underworld from Thane,” Angre told mid-day. Angre is said to have a good hold in the region and plans to contest the upcoming municipal elections in Thane.

“Thane is mired with number of civic issues. Corruption, garbage disposal and lack of open spaces, among others, are some of the problems I want to address. Also, I want to expose the ongoing corruption in the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT),” he said.

Angre and his son Rishikesh, a software engineer, joined the BJP in the presence of state BJP chief and Minister of State (MoS) for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Raosaheb Danve.

Commenting on Angre’s induction into the party, local BJP MLA Sanjay Kelkar said, “Nearly 100 people joined the BJP yesterday (Sunday) and Angre was one of them. He will surely be of help to us in the upcoming elections.”

Tainted past
58-year-old Angre was arrested for threatening local builders Mahesh and Ganesh Wagh in June 2010. He was later reinstated into the force and transferred to Gadchiroli. DGP Sanjeev Dayal transferred Angre as he thought the encounter specialist could be of great help to the local police. However, Angre refused to accept his transfer, following which he was dismissed from service in June 2014.
