A chill-out session went terribly wrong for a Thane policeman and his friends late on Thursday night. A day before resuming work after a month-long leave, Bharat Rawte, 30, attached to the Kasarvadavli police station, and two friends, sat by the serene Gaimukh creek in Thane late Thursday night with what sources said were a few drinks.
According to sources, after the ‘party’, Rawte got up and walked a little away to take a leak close to the waterfront. When he didn’t return for a while, his companions got up to search. They called his colleagues at the police station, and the fire brigade.
“We received a call at 3 am from the police about Rawte drowning near the creek. We asked for more information but the caller didn’t divulge too much,” said a source from the fire department. Search operations were slow until daybreak. The officials are yet to trace Rawte.

When mid-day tried getting in touch with senior inspector of Kasarvadavli police station, P Tele, he said he would have to check for details or have to check with the police station about the incident.
Rawte (28), who is married, was on month-long sick leave and was to resume today. He was with his cousin and friend. Sources said they were all drunk and had been caught at a nakabandi last night, but were allowed to go because Rawte was a cop.
