A 2009 state topper in the CET. An MBA student from Pune University. And a double amputee with a weight problem.

That's Anil Kamble, who will undergo a sleeve gastrectomy operation today, which will reduce the size of his stomach by 15 per cent.

"I have learnt to walk again after my accident in 2004, but I find it difficult to maintain my balance because I'm overweight," said Kamble.

Though the student weighs just 80 kilos, the weight gain has been steady as he it's impossible to lose weight without vigorous exercise, obviously difficult.

"My weight should not come in the way of a successful career," pointed out Anil from his room at the Brahma Kumari-run BSES MG hospital in Andheri.

"When campus placements happen at the end of the year, who would hire someone struggling with their weight and a handicap as well?" said Kamble, who's been trying to find a doctor for over a year now.

Doctor speaks

He found the man a fortnight ago in obesity surgeon Dr Sanjay Borude, who called to say that there was a hospital and date and that costs would be waived by the BSES management for his case.

"Anil has developed an ulcer on his leg stump and without surgery, he will find it extremely difficult to walk. He should recover within a week," said Dr Borude.

Kamble lost his legs when he was pushed off a train and he lost his legs under the train he was travelling on.

For Anil's parents, the surgery is a godsend. His father Balu works as a mechanic at the Mahindra & Mahindra factory in Igatpuri and has been striving to give his son the best possible education.

"Even after the accident I didn't want to compromise on his education and he's already made us proud by scoring 91.23 per cent, the topper in the physically handicapped category.

With this weight problems solved, we are certain he will achieve every dream of his," said Kamble.

A successful career in HR is next on the list for Kamble. "A job in Mumbai too perhaps," he smiled.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach.

The open edges are then attached together (often with surgical staples) to form a sleeve or tube with a banana shape.

The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach and is not reversible.
