Mumbai: An FIR was today registered against fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari for allegedly issuing death threats to an office-bearer of Maharashtra unit of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH), warning the latter against keeping any association with underworld don Chhota Shakeel.

Gangster Ravi Pujari was today booked under IPC sections 506 (2)(punishment for criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) for giving death threats over phone to Gulzar Azmi, secretary of the legal cell of Maharashtra unit of JUH, on December 12, said Anil Madvi, Senior Inspector at J J Marg police station.

Mumbai Police Crime Branch is conducting a parallel investigation into the case.

Azmi had complained in writing to the police on December 13 alleging that a man claiming to be Pujari rang him up at the office landline here the previous day and gave death threats warning that he should not keep any association with Shakeel.

Azmi had not only given written complaint against Pujari, but also against BJP legislator Ashish Shelar. However, police at present booked Pujari.

The threat call had been received by Azmi after politician Shelar, who is also BJP's Mumbai unit chief, had in the first week of December alleged on the floor of the House during the Maharashtra Assembly session in Nagpur, that JUH collects "huge" donations to fight cases for people arrested on terror charges and should be banned as it "promotes" terrorism.

The MLA also alleged that the outfit has links with Shakeel gang.

However, the non-profit organisation rubbished all the charges saying that they were completely "false, baseless and defamatory".

Azmi had claimed that his outfit had been legally assisting many innocent people since several years, but only after Shelar linked them with the underworld and demanded its ban, gangster Pujari dared to issue death threats to him.

On the issue of police not booking Shelar, Azmi said today, "I am consulting my lawyers. Police said they are enquiring into the matter and if required, other conspirators, if there are any, will also be booked at a later stage."
