Taking note of the significant rise in consumption of meat in the state over the years, it looks like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have finally woken up to the issue of hygiene maintained at the shops owned by registered vendors selling chicken, meat and fish.

“The sale of non-vegetarian food items has increased significantly. So to ensure that hygiene is maintained by those selling meat or pertaining products, we have decided to survey the registered shops in the state between January 1 and 5.
Later, a registration drive will be conducted for these shopkeepers from January 6 to 10, followed by a seminar to explain to them the importance of maintaining hygiene. This will be held from January 11 to 15. From January 16 onwards, action will be initiated against offenders,” said FDA commissioner, Dr Purushottam Bhapkar.
FDA officials said they have started visiting important fish and meat markets and cold storage facilities across the state to compile a list of vendors operating from these venues. They added that random checks will be conducted on registered shops selling meat and meat products, and samples collected would be subject to various freshness and hygiene tests.
“We have received information that several mutton shops fleece customers by selling sheep meat instead of goat. Such shopkeepers will also face the music,” an FDA official said. FDA officials said action against vendors could range from monetary penalty to cancellation of licence. Initially the officials plan to target big markets, followed by mid-level and minor sellers.
