The relatives of a railway accident victim, who succumbed to injuries on Tuesday afternoon, assaulted Dr Shashikant Dode, the on-duty surgeon. The attack left Dode with a fractured rib, injured eardrum and several bruises over his body. The Central Police Station of Ulhasnagar arrested three youngsters in the case, including a 16-year-old.

Kalyan Government Railway Police officials said that the patient, who was later identified as 38-year-old Saeeda Begum, had met with an accident on Tuesday at 9.05 am. She was apparently crossing the tracks near Ulhasnagar station and was run over by a CST-bound train. Kalyan GRP officials took her to Central Hospital.

“The patient’s condition wasn’t satisfactory when brought to the hospital. She had suffered a head injury, bilateral fractures of both the lower limbs and a stomach injury,” said the attending doctor.

Meanwhile, Saeeda’s family was informed. At around 1 pm, her condition started deteriorating and Dr Dode informed the relatives about the same. He also informed them that earlier doctors were planning to shift her to KEM Hospital but since the relatives weren’t available for consent, they continued the treatment at Central Hospital.

However, within half an hour of updating the relatives, Saeeda succumbed to the injuries. Her angry relatives started alleging negligence on part of Dode and his team, due to which she died. The relatives met Dr Ashok Nandapurkar, Civil Surgeon of the hospital, complaining about the negligence and asked him to take action.

Nandapurkar reviewed the case papers and explained the gravity of the injuries sustained by her, and sent the body for forensic analysis to gain clarity on the cause of death.

However, at around 5.45 pm, when Dr Dode was outside the casualty ward, around 5-6 youngsters who were nephews of Saeeda, according to the statement given to the police officials, started punching and kicking him for the alleged negligence that led to the death of their aunt.

A few security guards and doctors saved Dode from further injuries. The guards also managed to catch three of the youngsters and inform Central Police Station. Condemning the attack, Dr Nandapurkar said the incident took place barely 15 minutes after he left.

“15 minutes after I left the hospital I received the call about this incident. The attack, in the wake of all the recent attacks on doctors and healthcare workers around the state, is very disheartening and discouraging. A doctor, who would be negligent to the extent that his patient will die is yet to be born, no doctor would want his patient to die. But at times, it’s not in our hands to treat a patient whose condition is already critical,” said Nandapurkar.

Extra guards
Officials of the hospital met the DCP of their jurisdiction yesterday, requesting him to increase the security of the hospital and provide extra guards for casualty and labor departments.

Police speak
Police Inspector (Crime) S V Meher, said that they have booked all the accused under Sections 333 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) along with 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and 3 and 4 of Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage of Property) Act, 2010 commonly known as Doctors’ Protection Act.

“The minor accused has managed to get bail on personal bond, other two accused, Salman Siddique Shaikh (23), Saifali Sharif Shaikh (19) are in police custody and will be produced in the court tomorrow. We are taking all the necessary care to ensure safety and security of the doctors,” said Meher.
