Patel has promised that during his term, all of the 4,000 odd buses in the BEST fleet will have CCTV cameras installed for security reasons.
He also announced that the BEST committee plans to introduce GPS (Global Positioning System) in buses and at bus stops to enable commuters to know how long a journey will take and how long it will take before the next bus reaches the stop.
Patel, who has previously served as deputy mayor in 2005, said that the BEST was also conducting a survey in order to introduce more buses on BRTS (Bus Rapid Transport System) routes to enable passengers to travel long distances and reduce private vehicle traffic.
With regard to electricity, Patel also said that the committee was working hard to curb load-shedding.
However, due to forthcoming general elections and model code of conduct in play, Patel's role will be limited.
