With an objective to improve the health habits of Mumbai’s policemen, Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar has sought the help of renowned nutritionist Rekha Diwekar. In tune with the same, Diwekar paid a visit to Flavours, the canteen inside Mumbai Police Headquarters.
According to a report in Indian Express, Diwekar has given a three-point suggestion to improve the fitness levels of Mumbai cops -- first, instead of making oily bhajiyas for snacks, poha should be served. Bhajiyas should be prepared only once or twice a week. Secondly, instead of package curd, the one prepared in the canteen is a better option as it will be freshly prepared, and thus have high nutrition levels. Finally, aluminum vessels must be replaced with steel vessels.
Diwekar, however, told Indian Express that she is quite happy with what the canteen has to offer. “I was invited to give a general review and offer suggestions on how to further improve the nutrition level of the food offered at Flavours. I was quite impressed by it and that it performed well in both the health and hygiene aspects.”
Flavours was started in 2011 by the then Mumbai Police Commissioner, Arup Patnik, with the objective of serving healthy food. However, the Indian Express report further added according to 2015 data, 35 policemen died of heart diseases, and that the death of a cop this year has worried the top brass even further.
“He was not even 40 years old and he succumbed to an attack. Doctors within the force said a timely blood check or tests could have helped,” said a senior official. “We decided to take heed and look at food to begin our long journey in improving attitudes towards health,” an official informed Indian Express.
