Dey shared info with police over e-mail

A team of police officers has been scrutinising murdered journalist J Dey's e-mail account in the hope of finding a clue that could throw light on the motive behind the shootout on June 11.

The police said that they are focused on probing nearly 3,000 e-mails and 250 drafts from the two personal e-mail accounts of the senior scribe.

"We are scrutinising the e-mails that pertained to some stories he had done earlier," said Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy.

The cops are checking Dey's personal e-mail accounts as the journalist used these IDs to send and receive all his official mails that included all his stories as well.

While checking the e-mail history, the police discovered that most of his correspondence with police and even sharing of information was done from these two accounts.

The cops also found some e-mails that contained information that were not part of his stories, but those of his team members.

Hoax call
On the anonymous phone call that claimed that terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) was behind the killing, Roy said, "The caller had used a Yemeni SIM card, and spoke in Hindi and English." He added that prima facie it appeared to be a hoax call.

Last Saturday, an anonymous caller rang up the police control room, saying the IM had hired shooters from Kashmir to bump off Dey.

The police were probing the case in at least six angles of which two angles were "very strong", said another official. "Of the five witnesses we have, four had seen the actual shooting of the journalist," said the official.
