Despite mandate, KEM refuses X-ray on Sunday

Three weeks after BMC announced that X-ray services would be made available to patients all thorough Sunday, relatives of a patient discovered it wasn't quite reality at KEM hospital. The patient died waiting for X-ray and CT scan technicians to do their job yesterday.

"Firstly, they took over six hours to start the operation to amputate his right leg. At 11 am on Sunday, the operation was finally done and they asked us to get an X-ray as well as a CT scan of his stomach and lower abdomen," said Namdeo Pakhre, Prakash's cousin.

"But the X-ray technician turned us away saying they don't work on a Sunday. We even returned with doctor's request, but they still refused."

The relatives finally had to bring in a politician to pressure the technicians and at 3 pm, they finally succeeded in getting the scans. However, Prakash's condition did not improve and he died at 9 pm.

Dr Pravin Bangar from KEM hospital, said, "It has been two to three weeks since the X ray and CT scan services were made available on Sundays too. We will enquire about the claims made by the patient's family."
