In his statement to the police, the driver, Shyam Rai, recounted how Indrani had enlisted his help to plot the murder and scout for possible spots to dump the body.
He told the cops that he met Indrani a day before the murder at a three-star hotel close to her Worli residence. On April 23, 2012, the two of them also went to Raigad on a reconnaissance trip, to find suitable locations where they could dispose of the body.
Husband too
They returned to Mumbai the same day, and Indrani called her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna (second marriage) and asked him to come to the city as well. He took a flight out of Kolkata and arrived in Mumbai the next day — April 24, 2012. He was booked into a hotel nearby to ensure smooth execution of the plan, Rai told the police.

He added that he and Indrani first picked up Sanjeev from his hotel and then picked up Sheena from Linking Road, Bandra, around 6.45 pm. Sheena was strangled to death in the car.
Sanjeev left Mumbai the same night, while Indrani and Rai allegedly dumped the body in Pen on April 25. As per Rai’s statement, the body was taken there in a bag and was burnt using petrol.
‘I was asleep’
Sources said that Indrani had even paid some cash to Sanjeev after the murder and this money was then invested by him in a restaurant in Kolkata, where he is one of the partners.

However, after he was apprehended, Sanjeev had told the Alipore court that although he was in the car on that fateful day, he doesn’t know what happened, as he had fallen asleep around the time Sheena got in the car.
