mid-day reported the firing the next day (‘Gun-wielding man, friend flee after creating panic in bar’). Around 12.15 am on May 13, a fight had broken out between two groups at the bar. When it cooled down a while later, one man from each group went to the loo. While getting out of the toilet, one of them dropped a gun, which the other noticed. This led to chaos. As petrified customers rushed out of the bar, the gun-toting man threatened everybody, and began to leave without paying the bill. A waiter who ran behind him to collect the payment was hit by the butt of the gun. The assault was followed by a shot being fired in the air, which was then assumed to be accidental. The man and his friend then fled the spot.
The Dahisar police immediately got down to tracking the assailants with the help of CCTV camera footage from the bar. The trail led them to Deepak Kumar Sharma (26), a fast food stall owner from Vadodara, who has three criminal cases, including theft and robbery, registered against him at the Vadodara police station.
One attacked, other fired
Sharma, who was arrested and brought to Mumbai on Sunday night, told the police that the gun was fired by his friend, Anil Gangain alias Anthony. Gangain is a gangster who jumped parole in December last year while serving a sentence at the Jamnagar Central Jail in Gujarat for murder.
Sharma said he and Gangain had come down to Mumbai on May 12. He claimed to have tagged along with the gangster to the bar, where a tiff broke out with another group over a song request. He admitted that the two also got into an argument with a waiter and the bar manager over bill payment. He added that he hit the waiter with the butt of his revolver and Gangain fired a shot in the air to threaten the bar staff, before the two fled in an auto rickshaw. It was during his interrogation that the police found out about Sharma’s criminal antecedents.

He also revealed that Gangain is a lackey of a wanted gangster, Mukesh Harjani, in Gujarat, who has more than 36 cases — including murder, attempt to murder, extortion, robbery, dacoity and abduction — registered against him. Harjani is lodged at the Jamnagar Central Jail. The Dahisar police have launched a manhunt for Gangain.
