Once again, the lack of separate coaches for women in the Metro has emerged as a cause of concern. The Ghatkopar police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly stared at a fellow female passenger all the way from Ghatkopar to D N Nagar Metro station and also made lewd gestures.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 11.30 am on Monday, when the 24-year-old victim boarded a train from Ghatkopar. The accused boarded the train a little later and, standing near the victim, started staring at her.

This made her extremely uncomfortable, and she alighted at D N Nagar station and lodged a complaint with the D N Nagar police. On Tuesday morning the case was transferred to the Ghatkopar police, since the Metro begins at Ghatkopar.

Senior Inspector Rajaram Vhanmane of the Ghatkopar police station said, “The accused kept staring at the complainant and made lewd gestures.”

He added, “The woman has described the accused as a man who is 5’7” tall and sports a beard. We will soon make a sketch based on the description in order to nab him. We will also look at CCTV footage from Metro.”

The victim is a Mulund resident and works with a private firm in the Western suburbs. The police have registered a case against the unknown accused under sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
