Police on Sunday arrested the accused Vipin Karkhanis alias Ketan alias Milind Vaidya from Surat in Gujarat, on the basis of a complaint that was lodged against him by his wife Sushma in 2009 at JJ Marg police station.
However, the cops were baffled when, during interrogations, the accused confessed to having married at least five women in five years, and having duped them using the same modus operandi and different aliases.
At a press conference held yesterday, a police officer stated that the accused married women from Surat, Baroda, Nagpur and Pune. He would take away their gold ornaments, money and escape within a year or so. So far, none of the other wives have registered complaints, cops said.
The case
Sushma had registered herself at a matrimony mandal in Dadar, where the accused had also enrolled. In 2007, both got married and the accused purchased a flat in Kharghar. Then one day while Sushma and her husband were at her mother’s house, he asked her to hand over her mangalsutra and other gold ornaments so that he could add some more gold and redesign them. Clueless about his intentions, she gave him all her jewellery. The accused left and never returned, following which Sushma filed a complaint with J J Marg police station.
The accused has been charged under sections 420 and 406 of the IPC. He was produced in court and remanded in police custody till October 19.u00a0
