Nagpur: Congress spokesperson Al Naseer Zakaria has received flak from BJP workers for his sexist remark against Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta, criticising her outfit in a forthcoming album featuring her and superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
Zakaria made the remarks on national television on Saturday while debating law and order in the state in the backdrop of crime against women. He was slammed by other panellists and when he refused to apologise he was asked to quit the show. His comments have now been beeped out of the show’s online video. While the Fadnavis family didn’t comment, women and male workers from BJP expressed outrage.
Chairperson of the state women’s commission Vijaya Rahatkar condemned the remarks and said the commission would take note of Zakaria’s remarks. Rahatkar is a BJP leader and state appointee, but she said she not only spoke for the all-party political leaders’ honourable wives and daughters, but also for the women who don’t have any affiliation. “The very fact that a political leader makes such sexist remarks is against gender equality.” Rahatkar said she will take up the issue at the commission’s level after examining details.
BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhey came down heavily on Zakaria and his ilk in the Congress, “The entire Maharashtra knows how independent the CM’s wife is. She has always pursued her own hobbies. She is a self-made corporate executive and the CM has never interfered in her life. They represent a progressive Maharashtra.” He said the Congress leaders have shown sexist behaviour all along despite working under women presidents like the late Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. “The trend continues, making us believe that the party has a tradition of undermining women and treating them like animals,” said Upadhey.
Meanwhile, state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said, “The Congress does not agree with Zakaria’s personal views. The party does not approve of any such activity or remarks made against women.”
