Come up with a formula to ensure it gets more Cabinet berths than the NCP

The Congress is focusing all its energies on securing more portfolios from its ally, the NCP.

In fact, the party even has a formula for this purpose, by which it will get one ministerial berth for every 3.5 seats it won in the Assembly elections.

According to the law, the number of Cabinet berths ideally should not exceed 15 per cent of the 288-seat Assembly. This comes to around 44 berths.

However, Congressmen say this may be divided as 24 Cabinet berths for the Congress and 20 for the NCP.

The catch here is that this number will also have to include the Independents, depending on the party they support, and the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi, a small party from the Vasai-Virar belt.

Congress spokesperson Anant Gadgil refused to confirm the development. "Nothing has been decided as yet. This is just speculation and no formal talks have begun."

Most Wanted

The Congress seems bent on securing the Home portfolio, besides others like Finance and Public Works Department.

However, the party may forgo the Power portfolio, given the troubles the ministry has been facing due to the poor power situation in the state.

According to a Congress leader, the state leadership is adamant on securing crucial portfolios, as the high command agrees with the general mood in the party that Congress made a mistake when they parted with crucial Cabinet portfolios after the 2004 Assembly elections.
