Police officials said pressure is mounting on them and they are fearing a backlash if the case is transferred to the CBI, as has been demanded by journalists, politicians, and many PILs filed before the High Court including one submitted on Saturday.

An entire unit of the police department has been entrusted with the job of collecting details of the investigation carried out by the local police and the crime branch.

"The report will be submitted before the High Court on June 21. We have been asked to gather all the details of the investigation conducted so far, without leaving out a single clue," said a senior police officer, on condition of anonymity.

"If the case is transferred to the CBI on the basis of the PILs, it will be a major setback to the Mumbai Police and may even lead to a huge agitation against us," he added.

Another PIL
Meanwhile, another PIL seeking a CBI probe into Dey's murder and the alleged growing nexus between sections of the Mumbai police and the underworld was filed in the High Court on Saturday.

In the petition, S Balakrishnan, editor, Deshbhakti Andolan Weekly, an English tabloid,u00a0 has stated that the growing nexus between the police and underworld is a matter of deep concern and has serious implications for the civil society.

He has said that the dismissal of inspectors Aslam Momin and Pradeep Sharma for their alleged links with gangsters and the suspension of five police officials for dancing at gangsters' parties pointed to a worrisome trend.

He also noted in the petition that, recently, Pune Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar confirmed that she had ordered an inquiry into tapes of alleged conversations between Deputy Commissioner of Police Pradip

Sawant, who is currently posted with the Anti-Terrorist Squad, Mumbai, and Chhota Shakeel, chief
lieutenant of Dawood Ibrahim.

The petition will come up for hearing on June 21, along with other petitions seeking a CBI probe into Dey's killing. Other PILs have been filed by the Press Club, Mumbai, Marathi Patrakar Parishad, advocate V P Patil and former scribe Ketan Tirodkar.
