The deceased has been identified as Anil Merchant, a businessman, residing in Raj Arcade Apartments in Mahavir Nagar. Police said Merchant had been depressed for a long time and had even quit his business because of it.
Sub-Inspector Dattatray Desai from Kandivli police station said, “Around 12.30 pm on Thursday, we got a call from Merchant’s neighbours saying that he had hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his flat. We rushed to the spot and informed his wife, who works at a bank in Kandivli (West), about the incident. We took Merchant to the nearest hospital where the doctors declared him dead.”
Desai added, “The couple has been childless for many years and we assume that this is the reason Merchant killed himself. He was also seeing a psychologist to treat his depression.” Police found a suicide note, which stated: “I don’t want to live any more and due to depression and the treatment and medicines, I am killing myself. God, I am coming to your home.”
