Campa Cola demolition: Senior citizens disappointed after being unable to meet BMC chief

Residents of Campa Cola society in Worli have tried every trick in the book to save their homes, but all have failed. Yesterday, four senior citizens tried meeting Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte to request him to stop demolition of the illegal homes.

But, Kunte was not in his office, and his PA told the seniors that nothing could be done to save their homes the only exception being if Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan wrote or ordered the civic body to stay the demolition.

The residents had gone to the civic office hoping that the demolition process would be stopped on humanitarian grounds 140 families will be rendered homeless as the monsoon has begun. Mrunalini Poddar (60), one of the four, said, “Kunte’s PA told us that they do not want us to be in the darkness by telling us they can stop the demolition.

They have decided to make us homeless in this age.” The residents had also carried medical certificates of five residents of the society who are undergoing treatment and will need a roof over their head, but to no avail.

From Midtown Apartments, a resolute Raju Mohta (55), who also went to see the Commissioner Kunte, added, “They may pressurise us to leave, but we won’t budge. We will stay here even if the BMC disconnects our electricity, gas and water connections.”
