The brave cop’s heroic actions saved the day for Meena Deepak Dhakate, a 40-year-old resident of GTB Nagar, Sion. Dhakate was travelling from CST at 9 pm. She boarded the Panvel-bound train from platform 1 of CST. “When the train started, a man yanked at her mangalsutra from where she was standing near the door, but to her surprise, another woman jumped out of the train and started chasing the thief, eventually catching him,” said a GRP police officer from CST.

Dhakate alighted the train at Masjid station, and returned to CST, and learnt that a brave lady had caught the thief. “The thief did not anticipate that a constable was travelling in the train. The policewoman, Sheetal Narayan Pol, a resident of Mankhurd, had finished her bandobast duty at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and was returning home. She is attached to the Local Arms unit in Worli of the Mumbai Police,” said the police officer.

Pol jumped out of the running train and caught hold of Santosh Chandraban Kakaskar, a history sheeter who has been externed twice and has six cases of robbery against him. The CST GRP has sent a recommendation to the Commissioner of GRP, for a sum of Rs 5,000 to be awarded to Pol, who risked her life off duty hours and helped a woman retrieve jewellery worth Rs 99,000, and also caught the thief.
