A division bench of Justices RV More and V L Achiliya directed one group of youths to clean and sweep Mira Road railway station every Sunday for the next three months and another group to clean a municipal school in Thane every Sunday for the same period.
The youngsters had gone to a resort in Gorai in April last year separately where they got into a clash and attacked each other.
"All the 18 are of tender age between 18 to 27 years. They had gone for a party in Gorai on April 5, 2015 and in a drunk state they got into argument," advocate Sandesh Patil told the bench. Meanwhile, the bench observed that a woman was with the group of eight people and they got into an argument with the other group of 10 people and all were drunk. Something more grievous could have happened, the bench mentioned.
The court also ordered senior police inspector of Mira Road to see to it that the places were cleaned by them and submit a report to the court.
This is the second instance of the High Court handing out such a punishment to people who have sought dismissal of the case citing amicable settlement.
The HC had last month directed four youths from Thane district to sweep streets of their area once a week for the next six months to get a case of molestation and attempt to murder quashed against them.
