Navi Mumbai is to have a marina if things go as per plan. Officials from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) have chalked out a plan to construct it along a 1.8 km-stretch at Belapur.

On Thursday, officials from the town-planning agency examined the spot at Belapur where it is proposed. According to CIDCO, the marina will be 1.8 km-long spanning sectors 11, 14 and 15 at Belapur.

Features of the marina
Spread over an area of over 12,000 sq m, the proposed marina will be divided into four parts that will feature boat rides, mangrove sightseeing, gazebos, an amphitheatre, a garden, food plazas and many other recreational facilities.

Out of the total 12,000 sq m area, a garden will come up on 6,300 sq m area, while the food plaza is planned over a plot of 1,800 sq m. Further 4,000 sq m of area will be given to the state maritime board for developing a fuel pumping station, an Ro-Ro facility and parking space for 25 boats.

An elevated walkway starting from sector 11 will join the marina at sector 15. “The stretch of sector 11 consists of a mangrove patch. We have planned an elevated walkway so that people get to see and walk by the mangroves,” said an official from CIDCO. Work on the proposed marina will commence by January next year.

“We have planned to start the work from January 26 next year. The recreational part including a garden, food plazas and amphitheatre will be constructed by CIDCO, while the jetty and necessary infrastructure for boats and yachts will be developed by the state maritime board. We have not yet estimated the project cost,” said Mohan Ninawe, Chief public relations officer at CIDCO.
